Although I am not too far from it, a year has been sufficient time to reflect on my best advice to an incoming college freshman, particularly at UNC, from the perspective of a college sophomore. So, as of today, here is my best advice to you.
College will challenge all areas of your life from your ability to live on your own, to your diet habits, to your sleep needs, and all the way down to your beliefs. Everyone talks about how you change in college in a positive way, which you may, but with that said, it is important to keep in mind the things that shouldn’t change. What I am trying to get at is to make sure that you know your values and beliefs that should not be compromised, and, well, don’t compromise them. Have a firm foundation because, without it, you will be shaken. I guess what I’m trying to say is a lot of things will be thrown at you, but just because it's thrown, doesn't mean it should stick!
Be intentional about small things. It is the small things that will add up, and catch up to you in a big way. Take this as you please, as it can be applied to many things.
Go to Fall Fest. This one isn’t very deep, but it is important. As chaotic and overwhelming as it may be, this will be your best opportunity to get your foot in the door early at UNC. I recommend you sign up for all of the clubs that you may be interest in, go to a meeting or two, and then stay in your favorites. I stuck with Carolina Women in Business, Family Business Club, and CHAARG.
